2020 public workshop schedule to be announced soon

We just wrapped up a big year of public workshops—including sessions in London, Charlotte, San Francisco, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Milwaukee, Dublin, Copenhagen, and Zürich—with a fantastic final sold-out session in Chicago (that was also live streamed to people around the world!).

By the way, if you’ve heard the buzz about the custom SWD coffee blend that we gave away as part of the Let’s Practice! launch celebration and were sad to miss out, you can purchase your own craft roasted by Green to Bean.

We’ll announce the 2020 line up towards the end of this year. Click here to be notified when registration for 2020 public workshops opens.

If you need to communicate numbers or make presentations, you should attend.

Are you responsible for representing data in your day-to-day job? Is it important for you to be able to tell stories through graphs and presentations?

If you ever find yourself needing to communicate something to someone using data, this workshop is for you!

Whether you're an analyst crunching numbers, a manager needing to communicate in a data-driven way, or a leader responsible for presentations to your board or other stakeholders, this workshop will give you the tools to tell more effective stories with data.

5 lessons will improve your data storytelling in a hands-on, interactive day of learning.

The goal of this 1-day workshop is to enable you to bring data to life and use it to communicate a story to an audience, with a focus on simplicity and ease of interpretation. This is accomplished through a mix of data visualization and storytelling theory, best practices, and practical application.

Workshop content is organized into 5 key lessons:

  1. Understand the context

  2. Choose the right display

  3. Identify and eliminate clutter

  4. Draw attention where you want it

  5. Tell a story

Lessons are made concrete through numerous real world examples and individual and small group exercises. The workshops are highly interactive; registration is limited to ensure instructor/student interaction. Lessons focus on general best practices and are not tool-specific (examples are primarily Excel-based, but concepts can be applied in any graphing application or presentation software). Workshops are taught by Cole and participants receive a copy of the best-selling book, storytelling with data.

Some comments past attendees have shared with us:

"The session was the best training I have been to in years—I left excited, inspired and challenged to think of ways to do it better. I think anyone who reports findings from data back to clients would find this training valuable!"

"Very few training seminars that I've attended have been as directly applicable to my work as this one. I would definitely recommend it."

"This is a great intro course that everyone who ever presents information in written or slide form needs to attend. The logical framework for how to step back and think through the 'why' of the data you want to share, then the link to the visual representation was well done."

"I am INCREDIBLY judgmental and impatient with poorly planned and executed presentations. You were AMAZINGLY engaging and informative! It was immediately clear where I could utilize your training."

"I've attended 5 or 6 half-day and full-day dataviz trainings in the past year and yours has been the best."

"What did I like most? All of it. Super informative, fascinating, applicable content. Great, engaging presentation. Interesting content. Great tips and tricks."

"Cole—your session was awesome. Can't wait to take these lessons back to my team."
