targeted exercises to build data storytelling skills
It’s one thing to read about how to become a better data storyteller, it’s another to do it. This workbook will help you hone specific skills to build great graphs and slides. The exercises follow the same learning path as the original storytelling with data book. Each chapter contains three sections: solved exercises, unsolved exercises for additional practice, and exercises to use at work with your team.
which book should you read first?
For most, we highly recommend starting with the original storytelling with data book (“the white book”). This is a great introduction to data visualization. It will also introduce you to our process for crafting a data-driven story, which all of our books expand upon. From there, decide whether you want to practice applying the skills (let’s practice!, “the blue book”), move on to presentations (storytelling with you, “the yellow book”), or dive deeper with real-world case studies (before & after, “the teal book”). If you’re a seasoned practitioner, consider starting with one of our follow-ups.
For those who don’t work with data, but present frequently, start with storytelling with you.
All of our books cover different aspects of the journey towards more effective communication with data. They can be read as a collection, but each one stands on its own. Rest assured that we’ve included overviews of the SWD process and plenty of context in all of our books. Mix and match to create your best learning experience.
